Derma Pen Healing Time: What to Expect After Treatment

Derma Pen Healing Time: What to Expect After Treatment

Getting a Dermapen treatment is an exciting step towards smoother, healthier-looking skin, but understanding the healing process is just as important as the treatment itself. One of the most common questions we hear is how long does it take to heal after Derma Pen treatment?

While everyone’s skin heals a little differently, most people recover quickly when they follow the correct aftercare. In this guide, we’ll explain derma pen healing time, what you can expect each day, and how to care for your skin to achieve the best possible results.

If you’re getting ready for treatment, our guide on how to prepare for Dermapen microneedling is a helpful place to start.

What Happens to the Skin After a Derma Pen Treatment?

Immediately after a Dermapen session, it’s completely normal for your skin to look flushed and feel warm. The tiny micro-channels created during treatment stimulate your body’s natural healing response, encouraging collagen and elastin production.

Most people experience:

  • Redness similar to mild sunburn
  • Warmth and sensitivity
  • Tightness across the treated area
  • Mild swelling
  • Skin that appears slightly plumper than usual

The redness usually settles within the first 24 hours before gradually softening. However, it’s perfectly normal to retain some redness for up to 72 hours after treatment, particularly if deeper needling was performed.

What Is the Average Healing Time for Derma Pen?

When people ask how long does it take to heal after Derma Pen, they’re usually referring to the visible downtime. While the surface of the skin recovers fairly quickly, collagen production continues for months afterwards.

Days 1–3

During the first few days you can expect:

  • Redness
  • Warmth
  • Tightness
  • Sensitivity

It’s important to avoid:

  • Running
  • Hot Pilates
  • Saunas
  • Steam rooms
  • Excessive sweating

These activities can introduce bacteria into the tiny micro-channels and increase irritation.

Don’t be alarmed if you experience breakouts after treatment. This is completely normal. Dermapen stimulates cell renewal, which can bring underlying congestion to the surface before your skin clears.

Days 4–6

During this stage your skin may begin to:

  • Flake
  • Peel
  • Feel dry

Around Day 5 you can usually perform a very gentle exfoliation if recommended by your clinician.

Around Day 7

By the end of the first week, most clients notice their skin looking brighter, smoother and more refreshed.

If you’re treating acne scarring or deeper wrinkles, redness may take a little longer to completely disappear compared with treatments targeting texture or pigmentation.

You should ideally avoid makeup for the first 24 hours. Before wearing makeup again, it’s a good idea to thoroughly clean your brushes to minimise the risk of introducing bacteria onto freshly treated skin.

How to Care for Your Skin After Derma Pen

Proper skin needling aftercare plays a huge role in achieving the best results.

At Feeling Smooth, we provide Dermapen’s dedicated recovery kit, which contains everything you’ll need during the first five days after treatment.

Avoid active ingredients

For approximately seven days—or until peeling has completely stopped—avoid products containing:

  • Retinoids
  • Exfoliating acids
  • Vitamin C
  • Acne treatment products

These ingredients can further dry or irritate healing skin.

Focus on hydration

Some clients even find regular moisturisers feel slightly irritating immediately after treatment. If that’s the case, simply allow your skin more time before gradually reintroducing your normal skincare routine.

Protect your skin

Daily use of a physical zinc-based SPF is essential. Fresh collagen is particularly vulnerable to UV damage, making sun protection one of the most important parts of post-Dermapen care.

Factors That Affect Recovery Time

Everyone experiences microneedling recovery slightly differently.

Several factors influence how quickly your skin heals.

Treatment depth

Deeper treatments designed for acne scars or deeper wrinkles generally require a little more recovery than treatments for texture or skin rejuvenation.

Lifestyle factors

Your skin heals faster when your body is healthy.

Important factors include:

  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Eating a nutrient-rich diet
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Limiting alcohol consumption

Alcohol is dehydrating and can increase facial swelling by dilating blood vessels.

Exercise and heat

For at least 72 hours after treatment, avoid:

  • Intense exercise
  • Saunas
  • Hot showers
  • Steam rooms

Sweat and heat can increase inflammation and introduce bacteria into the healing skin.

Using an antibacterial facial spray throughout the day can also help keep your skin feeling fresh during recovery.

When Will I See Results from Derma Pen?

Although your skin begins repairing immediately, visible improvements usually appear between 7 and 14 days after treatment.

Once peeling has finished, you’ll generally notice:

  • Brighter skin
  • Improved texture
  • More even tone
  • A healthy glow

Collagen remodelling continues well beyond what you see in the mirror.

For most skin concerns, we recommend a course of 3–6 treatments, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Maximum collagen production typically occurs between 3 and 6 months, while deeper structural improvements can continue for up to 24 months following a complete treatment plan.

Supporting your skin from the inside out with hydration, nutritious food and daily SPF will help maximise your long-term results.
